How many things did you never try because you feared the answer?

How many times did you hold your phone
and never make the call? How many messages
did you write and never send? How many times
did you want to say something but stayed quiet?
How many things did you walk away from
before they even had a chance to happen?

Maybe you were afraid they would say no.
Maybe you thought you weren’t good enough.
Maybe you were afraid of looking foolish,
of failing, of finding out you couldn’t do it.

So you didn’t try.
You gave yourself the answer
before life had the chance to.

And sometimes,
that’s how we make our world smaller.

We suffer before we need to.
We imagine the rejection,
the failure, the disappointment,
and somehow live through it
before anything has even happened.

But maybe the hardest part
is simply stepping outside
the place where we feel safe.

Because once you do,
something changes.

You might get the no you were afraid of.
You might fail.
You might discover that you weren’t ready.

But you might also discover
that you were more capable than you thought.

And there is a strange kind of freedom
in finding that out.

You feel proud.
Not because everything worked,
but because you finally did something
you were afraid to do.

You opened a door
you had kept closed yourself.

Maybe that’s what trying really gives us.

Not the answer we hoped for,
but a little more freedom
to become who we can be.
